Basic and proud

It seems like these days, the biggest diss you can give a girl is calling her basic. The running joke around my office these days is that I fall perfectly into that basic category. I took the Buzzfeed 'How Basic Are You' quiz, and my score was off the charts.

Fashion designer, TV Personality, author, and inspiration to many, Lauren Conrad, was referred to was referred to as basic by Allure Magazine, and even tweeted to Allure about it.

Why should anybody be offended at being referred to as basic? What exactly does this entail? According to their quiz, the more things you check, the more basic you are. This includes all sorts of things, including owning Ugg boots (which I do) and loving scented candles (which everybody does).

4. You wear makeup to the gym.
Guilty. I don't go apply foundation or anything before going to work out, but there's almost always makeup on my face, because if I do go (which is rare), I don't take the trouble of washing my face post work, pre workout. That's normal, right?

12. You have a wedding Pinterest board before you were engaged.
If you don't do this, it just means you aren't going to be prepared when it comes time to plan you big day! My wedding board has all sorts of great ideas, from bridesmaid dresses and color schemes to how to change your last name and where you should register. Whenever the time comes that I need to start planning, by golly I'll be ready.

17. You LOVE brunch.
My thoughts on brunch here.

22. You say "margs" instead of margaritas.
It's called being efficient. If you have a lot to say, which obviously I do, why finish the word if everybody knows what I'm talking about. People's time is important, and I shouldn't force them to hear me say 'aritas' when they don't need to.

31. You love Diet Coke.
I'm not alone. Coca-Cola sold nearly 927 million cases of Diet Coke in 2010. Diet Coke has taken the number 2 spot of most consumed soda in the United States, trailing behind its big brother Coca-Cola.

33. You love Taylor Swift.
How could you not? She's a role model to her fans, writes her own songs, and dances to the beat of her own drum. People who dislike Taylor are trying to stand out and be unique, and it's not working. We don't believe you.

59. You think you're "so weird."
Let's face it. We all know I am.

70. You LOVE pumpkin spice.
Don't let the haters get you down. Pumpkin spice is a fall staple. That's like people being upset that you enjoy the beach during the summer, or like Christmas music in December.

72. You watch "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette."
Everybody has a ritual. Some people watch football every single Sunday. Others like to bike every Saturday. As for me, and the majority of TV watchers, it's Monday nights with The Bachelor.

112. You waited obsessively for the royal wedding.
The dress, the hats, the accents. I love the republic that is America, but Kim Kardashian doesn't cut it as royalty in my book, and for that reason, yes, I stayed up all night in college (with a group of other princess lovers), to watch the nuptials of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, Dutchess of Cambridge.

For all you girls out there that have been called 'basic' and taken offense to it, fear not. Being 'basic' is simply being awesome. You love great things, cool people, and delicious food. Why should you be ashamed of that? Own it girlfriend.
