And she's not the only one. Young, unmarried women are the ones who are least likely to vote in a midterm election. Only 23% of women ages 18 to 29 said they plan on voting in the midterm election, which is crazy. Why aren't we more excited to let our opinions be heard?
People get excited about big, publicized presidential elections, watch debates, post crazy Facebook statuses, buy t-shirts, donate money, and then ignore politics for four more years.
Just because we don't have a presidential election this November doesn't mean it isn't important, and doesn't mean the outcome won't impact you. There a countless reasons you should be voting, but I've complied a few (8) of my favorites to inspire you.
1. You're lucky enough to be able to, so why not. You don't have to own land, pass a literacy test, be a certain gender, be a noble, or do anything crazy to get to speak your mind. People have fought and protested for your right to vote, so get out and make them proud.
2. I won't be mad about your Facebook and Twitter rants (as much). People who want to gripe about politics, things going on in the world, old men in Washington, their rights, or anybody who has an opinion on how the US handles foreign affairs are completely and shares that on any form of social media, or even talks about it to people are the worst. Really. You have a say in all of these things, but instead of making your opinion heard, you just whine about it on Facebook. Not cool.
3. Parties! A lot of bars/restaurants will give you a discount or a free drink if you show up on election day with your super fashionable 'I Voted' sticker. Even better, deck out in red, white, and blue because America.
4. It impacts you, and the oldies know it. Our grandparents are out there changing laws about medicare, so why don't we vote and influence laws on student loans? Why not cast a vote for somebody who will create more jobs for recent college graduates? Don't let nana win.
5. Nobody wants to be the person that voted 100 times for American Idol, but has to embarrassingly admit you didn't vote for an election. Enough said.
6. This election decides who controls the senate. Which means it decides which laws are and are not passed. Important right?
7. It hardly takes any time at all! It would take you longer to blow dry your hair than to vote! Scrambling an egg takes longer! The world makes it so easy for you. You can fill out an absentee ballot, and if you're busy on November 4, you can even vote early. It's like they are begging for you to vote!
8. At age 18, you can defend your country, and get in trouble for its laws. Shouldn't you have a say in the country you are defending? Shouldn't you help make the laws that you have to abide by?
Even if you disagree with me politically, you should still be voting because it's so important. Don't worry, I'll remind you on November 4th!
